The main objective of the course is to strengthen participant’s technical abilities to contribute to local awareness of nutritional surveillance information and to improve awareness of the importance of nutrition and food safety across the region.
The online course on Nutritional Surveillance and Food Safety, coordinated by Zamorano, continues to garner interest from participants seeking practical, theoretical tools with modules and workshops programmed under a three-party agreement including UTSAN (La Unidad Técnica de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional)/ European Union/Zamorano. The 48 program technicians from the Better Families Program of the Development and Social Inclusion Secretary. (SEDIS), are a multidisciplinary group representing a variety of locales across Honduras. Each technician dedicates approximately 16 hours every week per module and workshop, strengthening their knowledge of the implementation of nutritional surveillance action plans in defined territories.
Modules I and II which cover nutritional needs from conception through age two have been successfully developed so far. Currently the technicians are studying module III in which they will strengthen their practical abilities for evaluating normal and pathologic growth, using exercises and anthropometric measurements under different circumstances. They have also been able to finish characterization and innovation workshops 1 and 2.
The instructional team has led the program by providing themes for demonstration purposes. The bulk of the responsibility is on participants to engage with the team’s information and produce results. Participants are using materials provided to them, including live online instruction, online instructive tutorials, assigned reading and controlled workshops. They are successfully developing nutritional surveillance action plans in their specific regions, thereby contributing to the nutritional knowledge of the general population nationwide.
