Since 2015, ZAMORANO initiated a commitment to incorporate an Environmental Management System that implied a transition to become a Green University. Last December, the 2016 GreenMetric World University Ranking announced the results that showed ZAMORANO first among green universities in Central America, eighteenth among Latin American universities, nineteenth among rural universities worldwide, and one hundred and ninety-seventh among the total number of participating universities.

In October, ZAMORANO submitted the application to participate in the ranking evaluation and position the country of Honduras in charts of environmental sustainability. This initiative annually classifies participating universities around the world according to six indicators of sustainability: environment and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water, transport, and education. The GreenMetric classification is carried out by Universitas Indonesia. This university studies the different environmental sustainability measures put in place by higher education institutions.

This classification becomes an opportunity for participating universities to share experiences and best practices in sustainability. In addition, baselines are created to measure and improve sustainability policies and establish cooperation networks among universities. Figuring in good ranking positions is the result of ZAMORANO’s effort under the leadership of the Environment and Development Department with the purpose of implementing environmental initiatives.
